Case: Working for a PFAS-free future

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of synthetic chemicals that include subgroups such as PFCs, PFOS, PFOA and many others. These substances have been used for decades in a wide variety of products such as clothing, food packaging, firefighting foam, carpets, and cosmetics. But also, in tents and outdoor gear. This is due to their water-, grease- and dirt-repellent properties. However, their persistence and harmful characteristics make them a global environmental and health concern.

They do not break down naturally and therefore are often referred to as “forever chemicals”. PFAS have been detected across the globe; in drinking water, soil, air, wildlife and even in human blood.

In 2018, we embarked on our mission to remove PFAS from our production. We wanted to do so without compromising the quality and durability of the materials used in our products.

First step was to map and identify all products where PFAS were used in the treatment of fabrics across our entire product range. At the same time, we began testing PFAS-free alternative materials both in production and in our own in-house facilities.

In 2020, we reached our first milestone by launching a wide range of PFAS-free sleeping bags and sleeping mats - a development very well received by consumers.

Technical and long-lasting fabrics are at the core of our product development, so it was natural to take our learnings into the next phase: tents and awnings, the heart of our business. Over several years, we tested PFAS-free fabrics with a particular focus on quality, longevity and water-repellent performance, carefully balancing our performance requirements with our commitment to reducing chemical use.

In 2024, we proudly introduced our first tents and vehicle awnings made from durable polyester fabrics treated with PFAS-free water repellency. Since then, this practice has taken an increasingly prominent place in our production.

2026 will be the first year with PFAS-free tent and awnings choices across all three of our brands: Outwell, easy camp and Robens. These products can be found under Outwell Caring Choice, easy camp NXT LVL, and Robens Our Promise.
